BLEMISHED: Highly decorative and colorful veena with a carved and painted dragon head on pegbox. This veena's body is made out of solid wood and its neck is made out of sheesham and has a wax finish. It has 7 metal strings, 3 on the side of fret board and 4 on the fret board. There are 7 sheesham tuning pegs and a brass end peg. The frets are brass and are mounted on wax fret board. The nut is brass and the bridge is brass and sheesham. It also has a lower and upper toomba (upper toomba is also considered a gourd) that act as resonating chambers for sound. The Saraswati veena takes its name from the four-armed Goddess of knowledge and the arts. The Goddess Saraswati is represented as sitting on a lotus and with 2 of her hands she plays the veena. The Sanskrit word sara means "essence" and swa means "self." Thus Saraswati means "the essence of the self."
