In the world of the Classical guitar, one name really stands out - Spanish luthier Torres, or to give him his full name; Antonio de Torres Jurado. (1817/92)
His designs were developed progressively from the 'fan-strutting' patterns used to reinforce the undersides of guitar soundboards around the turn of 18th / 19th century in Europe. This was a departure from the 'cross-braced' strutting applied during the Renaissance and Baroque periods on lutes and guitars. Torres guitars have been copied, revised and reformed by many other makers, some of whom have based their whole output on the great man's principles.
Without doubt, Torres changed the thinking of guitar makers of his time and up to the present day. Current players often request louder guitars from modern luthiers. Although achievable, it is sometimes at the risk of losing beautiful tone and balance, both elements of which are highly desirable to discerning players.
This is where the Torres-Taylor guitar excels! It utilizes the Torres principle of strutting, with thirteen, very light fan struts. These struts do not cross the part of the soundboard beneath the bridge and are not slotted into the rib-lining. The strut shape is also tapered from the center to the ends in both height and width. This effectively creates a 'domed' contour under the soundboard. The result is an effective string vibration that is transmitted across as much of the soundboard as possible, promoting resonance, tonal balance and increased volume.
An adjustable truss-rod in the neck and other refinements help produce a guitar that satisfies the demands of a serious performer.
Beautiful, high quality materials have been selected and handcrafted in creating the transcendent and superior Torres-Taylor guitar.
